Paul D. Bailey, MD

Personal information

Dr. Paul Bailey brings a deeply patient-centered approach to surgical care, grounded in both clinical excellence and compassion. His commitment to his patients was recognized early in his training when he received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from Albert Einstein Medical College. This honor reflects not just technical skill, but the quality of human connection he brings to medicine.

Dr. Bailey earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Rochester and completed his surgical training through a general surgery residency at Hahnemann University Hospital/Drexel University and chief residency at St. Luke’s University Health Network, followed by a fellowship in bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery at Hackensack University Hospital. He is a board-certified general surgeon.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Bailey is an active leader in the medical community. He is currently serving as Chief of General Surgery at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside and as Treasurer of the St. Johns County Medical Society, reflecting his commitment to advancing the standards of surgical care not only for his own patients but also for the broader community he serves.

At the heart of Dr. Bailey’s practice is a belief that patients deserve the least invasive, most effective path to recovery. He specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques that consistently deliver faster recovery times, less pain, shorter hospital stays, minimal scarring, and fewer complications. The robotic platform also gives Dr. Bailey enhanced precision and visualization, meaning every patient benefits from greater surgical control and accuracy.

Dr. Bailey provides comprehensive surgical care for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Weight loss surgery (bariatric procedures and revisions)
  • Gallbladder removal
  • Hernia repair — umbilical, ventral, inguinal, incisional, and complex hernias, including component separation
  • Foregut and acid reflux surgery
  • Skin procedures — Lipoma and cyst removal, hidradenitis
  • Emergency surgery

For patients seeking support beyond the operating room, Dr. Bailey also offers medical weight loss counseling and medication management, meeting patients wherever they are on their health journey.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Bailey enjoys cooking, gaming, and outdoor adventures with his wife, children, and rescue dog, Samson.

Dr Bailey performed my bariatric sleeve surgery one year ago. I just had my one year PO visit and I am down 140 pounds since the surgery. The surgery was an easy recovery and everything went perfectly this past year. I am continuing my weight loss and hope to be at my goal weight in 6 months. I can't praise Dr Bailey enough. A couple of years ago I wondered if I would live to the end of that year. Now I see decades ahead of me. My health has totally turned around after this surgery and my dedication to weight loss. I also had a hiatal hernia repair and have no reflux.

Dr. Bailey was the surgeon on call when I ended up with a strangulated hernia. He was very straight forward with his plan and possible complications before surgery. Post-op, he would always take time to answer my questions and has been completely transparent about what happened in surgery and recovery. I am very grateful that he happened to be on call that night.

Dr. Paul Bailey did an excellent job removing my gallbladder. From the first appointment to post-surgery follow-up, he was professional, knowledgeable, and very reassuring. He took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure I felt comfortable and confident about the procedure.
The surgery went smoothly, and my recovery has been great thanks to his care and guidance. His staff was also kind, respectful, and helpful throughout the entire process.
I truly appreciate Dr. Bailey’s dedication and compassion. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of gallbladder surgery or surgical care.

The 1st time I walked in, this team welcomed me. I came from Tennessee with no hopes of anyone able to help me. But Dr. Bailey looked me in my eyes and told me he could. This man gave me hope. And every time I call for answers, they are on top of their jobs!

Good morning I can’t say enough about my experience yesterday with Dr Bailey and the entire team. From the minute I walked in till my check out process. The young lady at the window greeted me with a kind smile and such a friendly welcoming. Dr Baileys nurse during the work up was very nice and made me feel very at ease . I was nervous and anxious about the visit. When Dr Bailey came in he was so welcoming and easy to talk to. Asking me questions about WHAT my opinion were how and what I felt. That was refreshing ! I did not feel rushed or discouraged about issues I was facing . He was engaged during the visit with kind smile and respectful eye contact. There is NOTHING worse than going to a Dr appt and they only look at a computer and make you feel like a number ! I can say nothing but Thank you ❤️. The check out young lady was awesome as well. Talking about the options for testing. Reviewing info on insurance and helping make future plans for treatment appts. Thank you all for making this step a lot easier !!!!Have wonderful weekend !!!!!

Dr. Paul Bailey and his staff are simply phenomenal! From my original consultation to surgery to now after surgery, they have taken such great care of me… Whether it be in the office, or virtual visits, phone calls or emails.. they have answered all my questions and concerns. They have followed up and reached out just to check in… Dr. Bailey listened to all my concerns and provided responses to all of them. My Gastric Sleeve surgery was 6/2/25 and I am down 41lbs from my pre-op diet beginning 5/12/25 to today… The surgery is a tool and I have added it to my toolbox to assist me in my goal of a healthier way of life. I am so thankful for this surgery and for Dr. Bailey. If you are considering this surgery and are looking for just the perfect surgeon contact Dr. Bailey… he is the best! The face to face comparison in the pics below are from left 6/15/25 and right 5/5/25…. Guess what?! It’s working… and so am I to reach my goals and get my life back!
